For holistic well being in old age, one needs a good balance between the physiological, emotional, physical and social aspects of life. An old age home should be a space where all these interconnected needs are met. Although a physical place, a building may not heal and make a lifetime of hardships faced by people of EWS/LIG category go away, it should aim at providing a comfortable and dignified living.

Buildings with courtyards have been an integral part of the Indian vernacular. It is a typology that most elderly can associate with and would feel comfortable in. The courtyard space with a central tree can bring birds and bees creating a natural habitat within the building, facilitating a natural environment that is most conducive for elderly living. With ample cross ventilation and escape of hot air through the courtyard, buildings also remain naturally cool. The linear shape of modules provides long shared common walls; where-in common walls have the tendency of being the strongest amongst all, unlike the individual external wall. Which lead us to make these common walls as the structural element.

Elderly are at this stage of life after having lived their lives in a certain way. With reduced activity due to old age, memories of the past become a integral part of their mind space. The facility we propose for their use should create a sense of belonging at home, in the conditions and feeling evoked by memories. This would facilitate a psychologically healthy space, which is the start to a holistic healthy being.
